Liability
A basic car insurance plan begins with auto liability. Liability insurance is required by almost every state and is the only barrier of financial protection between you and another party you may be liable for due to your actions as a driver. There are two parts to the liability section of car insurance.
Bodily injury liability: Pays medical bills and income lost (up to your selected liability limits) if you are involved in an accident which is your fault and they're injured. This covers anyone in the accident, plus legal fees if you're taken to court as a result of the incident.
Property damage liability: Pays for damages (up to your selected limits) to someone else's vehicle and/or property.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury
Uninsured/underinsured bodily injury covers you and your passengers (up to your selected limits) if you're injured in an accident and the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Property Damage
Uninsured/underinsured property damage pays to repair or replace your vehicle (up to your selected limits) if you're hit by a driver with not enough insurance or none at all.
Medical Payments
If you're in an accident, medical payments will pay for medical and funeral expenses (up to your selected limits). Medical payments can also cover your family members or passengers, regardless of fault.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive coverage protects your vehicle against fire, theft, vandalism, hitting an animal, glass breakage, or weather/acts of nature. A deductible (the amount of money you select you will pay out of pocket before your coverage begins) applies.
Collision
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your damaged vehicle if you collide with another object.. Collision covers you regardless of fault and also includes a deductible (the amount of money you select you will pay out of pocket before your coverage begins).
